On Sunday, September 28, at 4:30 p.m. in the Main Hall, the MORE Ministry Team invites you to a special film screening. As part of PBS’s American Experience series, American Coup: Wilmington 1898 explores the violent overthrow of Wilmington’s multiracial government in 1898—a devastating act of insurrection that was hidden from public history for decades. Through the voices of scholars, descendants of both perpetrators and victims, and archival accounts, the film brings to light this pivotal and long-suppressed chapter of North Carolina’s past. The score features an original song by North Carolina native Rhiannon Giddens, Grammy Award-winning musician, MacArthur “Genius” grant recipient, and Pulitzer Prize winner, whose music was also featured on Beyoncé’s 2024 album Cowboy Carter. Giddens is joined by Emmy Award-winner Keith David and a cast of national and local actors who give voice to first-hand accounts of the coup and its enduring legacy.
