Cate Church Norman, a native North Carolinian, has been serving at WMPC since 2018 as Associate Pastor for Pastoral Care. She’s been in pastoral ministry since 1999 when she graduated from Princeton Theological Seminary and has served congregations in Durham and Cary and worked with Campus Ministry in Raleigh before coming to WMPC. She has been an active participant in the life of New Hope Presbytery, serving on many committees and commissions, including the CPM and the Coordinating Body.
The scripture passage that has most guided Cate in pastoral ministry over the years is where Jesus offered the greatest commandments “’You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. . . and ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself’” (Matthew 22:37-39). In her work and in her discipleship, she seeks to love God and love people.
At White Memorial, in addition to worship leadership and teaching, Cate is primarily responsible for overseeing the pastoral care work of the Congregational Care Team and other staff, directing the Pastoral Residency Program and working with Deacons. Some of her most cherished time is spent caring for those who are bereaved and leading Healing Through Grief groups, which has led her to get certifications as a Grief Educator and an End-of-Life Doula.
Cate is also a certified Spiritual Director and loves learning about and collecting spiritual practices. She regularly offers spiritual direction and leads contemplative practices, retreats and pilgrimages at WMPC.
Cate is married to Bart Norman (her college sweetheart from NCSU), who is a lawyer in Raleigh and is mom to young adult sons, Eli (an NCSU alum) and Sam (an NCSU student). In her free time, Cate loves to travel, listen to live music, practice yoga and paint. She has developed a particular fondness for painting icons, which she finds spiritually centering.
